From UWW site KHORRAMSHAHR, Iran (December 19) -- The second World Greco-Roman
Wrestling Clubs Cup was held this week and capped the 2015 United World
Wrestling calendar with big money prizes, as the top three clubs earned
$100,000 in combined prize money. Iran's Bimeh Razi (IRI) won the title
to earn $50,000, Dinamo (ARM) placed second with $30,000 and Padideh
Andimeshk (IRI) came third with $20,000.
The competition was held in in the southern Iranian port city of
Khorramshahr, which hosted its biggest international sport event since
the start of the Iran-Iraq War in 1980.
Khorramshahr was captured by Iraq in 1980, but Iran recaptured the city
in 1982, after 578 days. The city was completely destroyed at that time,
but through reconstruction and big events like the wrestling world
cups, Iranians are hopeful that Khorramshahr can once again become a
major international city.
Twelve international teams from three continents attended the
championships: S-Primoga (UKR), Padideh Andimeshk (IRI), Budapest T.F.
(HUN) , NS Academy (BUL), Petroshimi Arvand (IRI), Manas (KGZ), Bimeh
Razi (IRI), Alp Arsalan (TKM) , Sina Sanat Izeh (IRI), Dinamo (ARM) ,
Aska (TJK) and Morocco Club (MOR) competed in the competition. Also some of the Olympic and world champions such as 2012 Olympic
champion Omid NOROOZI (IRI) and 2011 world champion Saeid ABDEVALI (IRI)
competed along with a handful of world medalists, including 2015 world
bronze medalist Yousef GHADERIAN (IRI), 2014 world bronze medalist
Afshin BYABANGARD (IRI) and two-time world bronze medalist Habibollah
AKHLAGI (IRI).
“The Iranian wrestling family has enjoyed almost three million dollars
from sponsors during this year’s Iran Premier Leagues and the World
Clubs Cups in both Greco-Roman and freestyle." said Iranian wrestling
president and former Olympic champion, Rasoul KHADEM. World Clubs Cup
competition is a new movement in world of wrestling that has started by
Iranian wrestling federation and we hope this competition help the
international wrestling to attract more sponsors.”
“The yearly holding of World Clubs Cup gives us the opportunity to
reduce its defects and by the help and cooperation of United World
Wrestling and specially president Nenad LALOVIC. I am sure this event
will be useful for developing wrestling all over the world.” Khadem
added. Although women are not allowed to watch men competitions in the halls
and stadiums, the mother of 130kg Wrestler Amir Ghasemi MONJAZI (IRI)
broke the protocol and came inside the hall to watch her son’s defeat
2011 world bronze medalist Bashir BABAJANZADEH.
